EASA GRANTS DUNLOP AIRCRAFT TYRES PART 21 SUBPART J APPROVAL

The European Aviation Safety Agency has granted Part 21 Design Organisation Approval (DOA) to Dunlop Aircraft Tyres Ltd, the only aircraft tyre company to hold this certification.

While the company has been designing new and retread tyres for many years, this Part 21 DOA enables Dunlop Aircraft Tyres to make aircraft modifications in respect of tyre changes and repairs in accordance with the applicable type certification and environmental requirements.

This is seen a major step forward for the company. Technical Director, Martin Pye, explains: “This basically means we are approved to apply for and hold Supplemental Type Certificates (STC) for our tyres, applied for on an aircraft type-by -type basis.

“It also means we can classify changes to our products and approve minor changes and repairs. We can also approve the design of major repairs to products for which we hold an STC.”

The company currently holds an STC for fitment of its tyres to Bombardier CRJ700 and CRJ900 aircraft.

Martin Pye welcomed this important development. He concluded: “We are now operating at a higher level. Previously, we just used to design and seek approval for aircraft tyres. Now we can seek approval to modify an aircraft by fitting Dunlop tyres as opposed to the ones originally type certified.

“Modifications would previously have been done and approved by the aircraft constructor under its own type certificate. Our Part 21 approval is an important advance for our business which places us at the leading edge of the industry.”
